Siemens Introduces the Innovative S3 System Technology for Pharmaceutical Water Treatment Systems
Siemens Water Technologies offers an innovative proprietary process that reduces the amount of energy and water consumed, and the wastewater generated, by a pharmaceutical water purification system. The S3 System Technology achieves these benefits by shutting down the make-up water system during periods of non use, so that it does not continuously recirculate the make-up water. Any size application will realize energy and water savings from the S3 System; however, applications with higher flow rates and redundant process trains, and in areas where utility costs are high, will benefit most.
In order to control microbial contamination, many pharmaceutical water systems recirculate during periods of non-use. This recirculation consumes water and energy, wears out parts and components, and produces wastewater that must be treated or discarded. Systems that incorporate the S3 System Technology, however, shut down when there is no "call- for-water" signal. When they receive a call for water, they automatically undergo a rapid heat sanitization to control microbial growth before resuming normal operation. Even during long periods of non-use, the system will automatically sanitize and then return to a dormant state, thus ensuring superior microbial control.

Systems that use the technology in the S3 System also require fewer consumables such as salt, pH adjustment chemicals, dechlorination chemicals, filter cartridges and ultraviolet lamps. In addition, the process lengthens the useful life of components such as pumps, membranes and continuous deionization modules (S3 CDI stacks).

As an added advantage, the S3 System design can eliminate an otherwise necessary break tank and booster pump, reducing the required system footprint and streamlining system validation.
S3 and CDI are trademarks of Siemens and/or its affiliates in some countries.
