Siemens and Singapore’s PUB cooperate on full-scale MBR validation plant at Changi Water Reclamation Plant
Siemens Water Technologies and the Singapore Public Utility Board (PUB) have agreed to cooperate on a full-scale membrane bioreactor testing facility at PUB’s Changi Water Reclamation Plant. The new, 250,000 gpd (1.0 million liter/day) MBR system will treat domestic wastewater and test new innovative design parameters for the Siemens MBR system. PUB will provide the location for the new plant, while Siemens will be responsible for all operation and maintenance aspects of the validation plant. Siemens expects the plant to be in operation for a minimum of five years.
“This full-scale MBR plant is part of our ongoing focused R&D efforts on sustainable technologies,” said Ruediger Knauf, Vice President of R&D for Siemens Water Technologies. “The validation plant will allow us to validate new product and process developments quickly under real conditions, so we can bring value to our customers through reduced life-cycle costs and process improvements.”
Membrane bioreactor technology is used in municipal and industrial applications. Siemens Water Technologies has seen significant interest in the technology for wastewater reuse applications, in addition to new housing developments and resorts. The membrane bioreactor (MBR) system from Siemens Water Technologies combines a single sludge aerobic biological treatment process with an integrated, immersed membrane system. The MBR process represents the union of two native Siemens technologies. The activated treatment process handles liquid/solids separation on a molecular scale. The mixing system transports dissolved air and mixed liquor uniformly and positively around and across Memcor microfiltration modules. These membrane modules have been adapted by Siemens to withstand the rigors of continuous immersion in activated sludge.
The Changi Water Reclamation Plant is part of the first phase of the Singapore Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) project. The Changi Water Reclamation Plant will eventually be one of two water treatment facilities in the country, replacing the existing eight plants. Most of the recycled water from the plant will be used for industrial purposes; some will be discharged into the ocean. The facility handles 800,000 cmd (cubicmeters per day) equivalent. “Through this cooperation, we look forward to strengthening our relationship with the PUB and appreciate their enthusiastic support of this project,” addeaidd Knauf.
